Mississauga, ONTARIO (PRWEB) June 05, 2014

Acer Canada today announced that it has been selected by Wolf Creek Public Schools to provide the district with a range of computer systems for students, faculty and staff in a contract that spans the next five-years. The agreement calls for Acer Canada to provide the district with Chromebooks, notebooks, desktop PCs and displays.

The school district will begin to deploy Acer systems this summer for the 2014-2015 school year. The initial roll-out will include up to 5,000 of Acer’s award-winning C720 Chromebook for use by students in 1:1 programs and in computer labs. The Chromebooks will be used by K-12 students at elementary, middle and high schools as well as in district learning centers.

Currently, Wolf Creek Public Schools allow students to bring in devices to support their learning. The school district plans to implement a purchase program whereby parents can purchase Acer C720 Chromebooks for their child through the district by making regular payments.

Over the next five years, Acer will also provide the district with TravelMate Pro notebook PCs, Veriton L4630 desktop PCs and B-Series monitors for use in classrooms, speciality learning labs, as well as by administration and staff.

Wolf Creek is a recognized technology and educational leader in Alberta school divisions in the area of purposeful technology integration within teaching and learning and often advises other school boards in Alberta and other provinces on the latest technology deployments.

“Our partnership with manufacturers, vendors and resellers is important to us, as we’re viewed as a leader in implementing technology that enhances the education of our K-12 students,” said Mark McWhinnie, Assistant Superintendent (Technology Services) for Wolf Creek Public Schools. “As a result, we’re often asked for advice around educational technologies from our colleagues throughout Canada. We chose Acer for both its experience with the latest technology and wide range of flexible service and support structures. We’re confident that working with Acer, we’ll be able to provide solid technology solutions for our students, administration and staff to further advance our vision of ‘Creating Success for All Learners’ in Wolf Creek Public Schools.”

An important component of Wolf Creek Public Schools’ selection of Acer was the company’s wide range of flexible service offerings. Acer’s extensive services and warranty options are offered at an excellent value to protect the investment the school is making. Acer is also able to provide product support to Wolf Creek Public Schools via its depot services, on-site at schools or through local dealers.

“We are honored to work with Wolf Creek Public Schools as they use Acer technology products to make a significant impact on the education of their students,” said John Way, Sales Manager, Western Canada, Acer Canada. “Acer Chromebooks have been incredibly well received by schools that need a cost-effective, easy-to-manage way to introduce technology to their students. In addition, the rest of the line including our TravelMate Pro notebooks and Veriton desktop PCs will keep students in labs, as well as district’s faculty and staff, access to the latest in Windows-based computers for work and studies.”

Like all of Acer’s education and business customers, Wolf Creek Public Schools are eligible for Acer’s Premier Service and Support from the company’s North America-based service operation. The district will receive dedicated Acer Premier Service and Support via their own direct phone number into the Acer level 2 support call center, which automatically places them at the head of the call queue. The Acer Educare Warranty Programs further protects the investment of Acer computers and displays with solutions such as battery replacement, paid two-way shipping, and accidental damage protection.

Acer is the No. 1 vendor in Canada for notebooks and the country’s No. 3 overall PC provider.(1) More information about Acer and its products in Canada can be found at http://www.acer.ca.

RAS (Remote Astronomical Society) Observatory Announces Free Web-based Seminar on Astronomy at the South Pole–General Public Invited

Fountain Valley, CA (PRWEB) March 1, 2006

The RAS (Remote Astronomical Society) Observatory, in conjunction with Ivocalize.com, (http://www.ivocalize.com) a web conference hosting service, announced another in the continuing series of web-based seminars that are made available to the world-wide general public.

The seminar titled, “Astronomy at the South Pole”, is presented by Simon P. Balm, Ph.D (http://homepage.smc.edu/balm_simon/) and is being offered as a public service of the RAS Observatory. There is no charge for access to this seminar.

When asked about his experience, Dr. Balm explained, “Antarctica is the coldest, driest, and most desolate continent on the surface of the Earth. However, these extreme conditions also make the high Antarctic plateau one of the best observing sites for astronomical research.” Simon went on to say that, “I intend to describe my experiences during three trips to the icy continent; this included a whole year spent wintering-over with a radio telescope at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole station.”

Here are the main points:

•Who: Presented by Simon P. Balm, Ph.D (http://homepage.smc.edu/balm_simon/)

•What: Web-based seminar on “Astronomy at the South Pole”

•Where: On your most convenient web connected computer via the internet

•When: Sunday, March 5, 2005 12:00 PM MST (19:00 UTC). Approximately 1 hour long

•What: Hear about the exciting adventures in Radio Astronomy with a radio telescope at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole station

Those wishing to participate are invited to join a Yahoo group specifically setup for this meeting. The link to that group may be found at http://www.ras-observatory.org/ras/Web_Seminars/web_seminars.html

All further information will be distributed only to those that sign up for this group. Questions should be directed to the email link provided.

The sponsors indicate that hundreds of attendees can be simultaneously accommodated to participate in this seminar. However, space is limited so interested parties are urged to sign-up immediately to guarantee a seat.

Here is some more about our guest speaker: Simon P. Balm, Ph D.

A native of London, England, Simon Balm received his Batchelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of Durham in 1988. He was awarded his Ph.D. in Chemical Physics from the University of Sussex in 1992, while working with Nobel Prize winning chemist Sir Harry Kroto.

After graduate school he spent two years as a NATO Postdoctoral Fellow in the UCLA astronomy Department. He followed up that tour with a four year term as a Postdoctoral fellow at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, MA. At the Harvard-Smithsonian Center he helped to design, build and install a radio telescope at the geographical South Pole. He wintered-over with the telescope at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole station during the 1996 austral winter.

After spending several years teaching as an Adjunct Professor at UCLA he joined Santa Monica College as a full time faculty member in 2000 where he is a Professor of Astronomy. He is currently working with renowned Santa Monica artist Lita Albuquerque on an art installation project planned for the South Pole Station in 2008.

Public Library Systems Spend $47,000 Annually on Personal Computers

Public Library Systems Spend $ 47,000 Annually on Personal Computers

(PRWEB) June 27, 2013

The study found that the public library systems in the sample spent a mean of $ 47,357 for personal computers and workstations in the past year. Laptops make some inroads into the public library market, and public libraries with more than 10 employees purchased a mean of 3.71 laptop computers in the past year. Nonetheless, smaller libraries with a budget of less than $ 100,000 had an average stock of only 1.31 laptops. Spending was also modest on eBook Reading devices, an estimated mean of $ 483 on eBook reading devices in 2012. However, mobile computing is making its mark on the Nation’s public libraries and 44.9% of the libraries sampled currently own or lease an Amazon Kindle and 18.37% of the libraries plan on purchasing a Barnes & Noble Nook over the next two years.

The report ($ 59.00) is available from Primary Research Group (http://www.PrimaryResearch.com) and also from major book vendors such as Amazon, Baker & Taylor, Yankee Book Peddler, Midwest Library Services, Overdrive and other distributors of content.
