Understanding Hardware “Bottlenecks” and How to Avoid Them (NCIX Tech Tips #81)
Today Linus covers the topic of “bottlenecking” in the context of computer hardware, and gives some strategies to help avoid it and get the most out of your computer.
www.newegg.com Welcome to Part 2 of Newegg TV’s How To Build a Computer tutorial The Build! In this episode we’ve gone for epic-scale length and detail. We have two complete builds to share, and step-by-step instructions for how they’re put together. To make the video even longer, the first half covers an “external build”, which involves connecting your core components outside the case to do a test boot and make sure everything is working. Defective parts are rare, but they can put a damper on your build if they’re not identified early in the process. Next up is installing parts into the case, cable routing, and the moment of truth: the first boot after assembly is complete. Enjoy! No. Might wanna add a second PSU
Thanks for the advice.
WHAT THE FUCK! 3 WAY TITAN???????? past 2 way titan the 3rd is wasted money as it will never be past 30% load on anything.
No, if there is a bottle neck it will be tiny and only due to the 660ti, if you have the money i recommend the 670, but it shouldn’t be a large problem.
I also have a 5870 to tri-fire when everything comes in.
Yes I’m also using this for work. Developing Android Apps takes allot of memory. Still on slow on my 4Gig of ram. My current board is an ASUS M3A79-T Deluxe.
If you intend to work with your rig as well as game, I can see the i7 and gobs of ram. If your main priority is gaming, you can save some money on the cpu by getting an i5 3570K. If you already have at least 8GB of relatively fast ddr3(1600 or 1867), then you don’t need more. Just realized. hd5970 has 1GB per gpu. That could be a limitation in skyrim with enhanced textures and/or lots of AA. Are you keeping it or getting a different card? You could save on cpu/ram, get new qpu then sell the old.
Intel 3770K CPU
GA Z77X UP7 mobo
G Skill TridentX F3-2400C10Q-32GTX Memory
Will this be bottlenecking: i7-3930k and Asus Geforce Gtx Titan 3-way SLI
You are good mate No bottleneck
What are you getting?
I already have it built, but I was just curious if there could be a bottleneck. (i dont think there is, just checking) Intel Core i7 3770K with 8GB of DDR3 RAM and a GTX 660Ti
I’m not a professional, but I know my stuff, and I would have to say yes, due to it being a really high end card and the processor only being a quad core. (Because unlike back then, most games will get close to 80-90% CPU usage on a quad core.
That’s a relief, I was losing faith in my computer knowledge haha.
My Gran has a best build!!
I’m thinking of buying a new gaming computer and its specs are AMD Phenom 2 x4 3.4GHz, Sapphire Radeon HD 7770, and 8 GB of ram. Will anything “Bottleneck” each other and is it good enough for gaming?
they are 1GB models gddr5 gigabyte models.. still plays most games on full settings
I’ll be overclocking it to 4.2GHz next month.
I wont have this problem turns out I’m getting new hardware.
if i got a asus 7970 would it bottleneck my amd phenom 965?
No problem. I guess I didn’t ask before, but is your 965BE overclocked to at least between 3.7 and 4ghz? It’s kind of a waste to have that cpu and not overclock it. When it is overclocked some, it should help to eliminate any potential bottlenecks.
No, you are right. I looked up some hd3000 benches(both stock and overclocked) and based on gt430 specs, it would probably handily beat hd3000 in most anything. hd3000 is also limited to dx10, while gt430 is a dx11 gpu(of which I’m sure you are well aware).
Thank you!
Because nivida is the chip of The some of the video cards like the Asia
Stfu bonka dubz it is better
its my experience if you use 3d software or 3d engine, 3d modeling you will know tha Nvidia works perfect but AMD are not perfect they have lot of problems with 3d display in 3d software.
You will say get a workstation card, I got an AMD FirePro v3900 but I got these problems even after lot of driver updating, System was really good 8GB RAM, Fx 8150, Gigabyte D3H motherboard.
but same version are running better on my old amd x2, Nvidia GTS 450.

I use a sink full of water as my “test bench”. That way you get no static electricity. Just put it by a fan to dry.
Thanks for updating your problem.
thank you
I build custom the best custom pc’s for the best price just pm me or fill out the form on my channel
IM 11 AND I BUILT A COMPUTER USING THIS TUTORIAL!! Thanks a lot NEWEGG
nvm the ram wasn’t seated completely
Can anyone tell me whether Paul’s Thermal Paste applying method is any good because I’ve recently heard about a lot of different methods and specifically the method where people let the thermal paste spread by itself from the heat sink. Is that method any good? What is the best method for spreading thermal paste?
some video cards dont need power from the power supply, depends on how powerful the card is
idk try doing a test boot it might.
He says 3-4 hours… It took me 1h 10m
the absence of a hardisk? its should be normal when you are doing a boot test.
He keeps dropping shit. I think that’s fucking hilarious.
I believe so, yes. Make to to read the instruction manual too and it should mention if it needs a PCI Express cable. But I doubt it since you mentioned that there is no port in the back of the video card.
A little help about my video card, it is a Vision Tek Radeon HD 4550, but there is no port to put a PCI Express power cable. Any ideas? Will it still get power?
I got to the external boot test, the text that appears on my monitor is this: “Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key”. What could be the cause of this? Please reply, thanks in advance.
I did an external build. all the fans are running but when I turn on the monitor it automaticly goes to sleep mode. My board didn’t come with a speaker so i couldn’t hear a post beep.
do you need the firewire cable? i can’t find it 0.o
same here
This is so damn helpful, thanks so much for this video!
like mother board or power supplie I dont know
what part should I buy first thanks
where can i buy one of those speakers?
