eReflect Reports About The Pen That Can See If You Made A Spelling Error

eReflect Reports About The Pen That Can See If You Made A Spelling Error

New York City, NY (PRWEB) December 03, 2013

A German start-up company has developed Lernstift (German for “learning pen”), a Linux-computer based pen that using patent pending technology to detect spelling errors when the user writes out text in longhand on paper, or even in the air. In this short announcement, eReflect, developer of Ultimate Spelling™ software, recently discussed the educational potential of Lernstift and how such pioneering technologies can be used for improving spelling.

The Lernstift is still in development but available for pre-order. Using cutting-edge technology it seeks to help students with their spelling in a way that’s both reliable and fun; the pen vibrates each time a misspelling is recognized by the pen’s computer, urging the speller to reconsider the last word written.

Lernstift runs on an AAA battery. By using a non-optical motion sensor the pen is able to identify letters, symbols, and other characters. Its 3D technology allows the pen to recognize mistakes even if the pen holder draws or writes in the air. The computer-integrated pen is Wi-Fi powered allowing people to instantly check their handwriting on a connected device.

eReflect reports that such advanced spelling aid tools could be easily introduced in language classes for both native and non-native English speakers in an effort to provide reliable and instant feedback on misspellings. However, eReflect emphasized that while word processing spellcheckers and “smartpens” might let us save face by warning us about embarrassing misspellings, the most reliable go-to spellchecker is the brain. Having a firm grounding in spelling rules and orthography will let people confidently write both on computers and paper without worrying about a misspelling getting away.

eReflect predicts that in a few years time, such smartpens might be a common spelling aid in schools, offices and other fields where handwriting is used. Especially for young spellers, such learning aids might facilitate and even accelerate spelling learning thanks to its instant feedback.

Bell Direct Launches new SMS Share Trading for the ASX

Bell Direct Launches new SMS Share Trading for the ASX

Sydney, NSW (PRWEB) February 29, 2008

Bell Direct, Australia’s most innovative and competitively-priced online share trading platform, today launched the first ever SMS share trading service for the Australian Stock Exchange.

From today, Bell Direct customers will be able to enjoy the convenience of buying and selling shares on the ASX from their mobile phone via a simple SMS transaction that is easy, quick and secure.

Chief Operating Officer, Lee Muco, said “Bell Direct’s introduction of SMS share trading into Australia will provide investors with a new level of convenience and fast access to the stock market, allowing users to trade shares using their most familiar accessory – the mobile phone.”

“As long as investors have their mobile phone handy, Bell Direct SMS share trading enables them to trade shares even if they are away from their computer or without Internet access. Given the recent stock market volatility and downturn this functionality has become even more important for certain investors,” Mr. Muco said.

“Whilst Australian investors have previously been able to trade shares via mobile phones, they have had to do so by using WAP internet access, which compared to using SMS, is cumbersome, complicated and can be expensive. Accessing the internet on your phone is still nowhere near as fast and easy as sending an SMS and can carry all sorts of hidden data usage costs, and of course everybody is familiar with how to use SMS,” Mr, Muco said.

Bell Direct customers using SMS share trading will pay a fixed cost of only 55 cents per SMS, and benefit from Bell Direct’s market-beating online brokerage pricing of just $ 15 per trade.

Although brand new to Australia, SMS share trading is already extremely popular in South East Asian markets such as China, Malaysia and South Korea.

According to a recent report by US firm Research & Markets, at the end of 2007 there were 1.48 million mobile stock traders in China, a figure forecast to rise to 2.58 million by the end of 2008.

Mr. Muco said Bell Direct was confident that its SMS share trading facility would also be enthusiastically taken up by Australian investors.

“Australians are increasingly comfortable with SMS as a channel for financial transactions, and with the major banks introducing SMS banking, SMS share trading is a logical and exciting innovation for Bell Direct to introduce,” Mr. Muco said.

Bell Direct was launched in November last year and is the first new online share trading platform to begin operating in Australia in a decade. The company is part-owned by Bell Financial which listed on the ASX in December last year.

The Executive Chairman and principal architect of Bell Direct is Steven Goh, a true innovator in the online share trading industry. Mr Goh created Australia’s first online stockbroker, Sanford Securities, in 1997.

Mr. Goh said that cutting-edge, proprietary technology developed from the ground up and designed to enhance the customer experience was at the core of Bell Direct.

“Our SMS share trading service is an example of how our completely new trading platform is flexible enough to meet the demands of today’s investor for ever-more innovative and convenient products,” Mr. Goh said.

“In technological terms, and in the service we offer our customers we are streets ahead of our competitors, and SMS share trading is just the first of a raft of exciting innovations Bell Direct will be bringing to the Australian investment community this year,” he said.

About Bell Direct –

Bell Direct is the newest, most user-friendly and discount online share trading service available to investors in Australia , including the lowest cost-per-trade ever offered by an online broker at just $ 15, Bell Direct was developed by the same pioneering team that created Australia’s very first online share brokerage, What makes Bell Direct unique is its world-class, proprietary web 2.0 technology designed specifically for an enhanced customer experience and value proposition which competitors cannot match. Bell Direct is independent and Australian-owned, and has the backing of Bell Financial, the ASX-listed parent of one of Australia’s largest and most respected private client stockbroking firms, Bell Potter Securities. Two-Thumb Text Entry May Be The Future of Touch Typing, Says eReflect

Two-Thumb Text Entry May Be The Future of Touch Typing, Says eReflect

New York City, NY (PRWEB) December 17, 2013

The proliferation of mobile devices is pushing technology to new levels. As more people use handheld devices to go online, it is only natural that new, more efficient, mobile device-specific keyboard layouts will be developed. As the latest statement from eReflect points out, even though the QWERTY keyboard is a diehard keyboard layout common for computer and internet access around the world, two-thumb layouts are constantly being developed and tested for use in mobile devices. eReflect mentioned a recent Max Planck Institute for Informatics study which has designed the KALQ keyboard, a two-thumb text entry keyboard to be used on mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones.

The recommended KALQ keyboard factors in thumb travel distance and optimizes thumb switching in order to be a fast and accurate QWERTY alternative. As eReflect notes, the 37 words per minute KALQ keyboard users achieved after brief training is a promising outcome which confirms how two-thumb touch typing might be a potent replacement for the QWERTY keyboard on touch screen, handheld devices in the future.

Maximum thumb travel for the right keyboard section is 117 pixels and for the left section, 87. While the right section of the keyboard includes all vowels (except the “sometimes vowel” y), the left using new positioning around a spacebar for all consonants except for G, T, K, L, and Q. This novel configuration for the KALQ keyboard was decided after the researchers looked into how the user should hold the device and how letters should be positioned to achieve a faster typing output. The hover-over technique the researchers implemented in the KALQ keyboard allows the user to place the finger over the next to-be-typed key, another time-saving feature.

eReflect said that keyboard training with the KALQ layout, and for that matter any other split screen keyboard layout, has its own idiosyncratic challenges that can be overcome once formal and effective keyboard training is also introduced. In the end, as the statement from eReflect concludes, while two-thumb typing might be a potent solution for mobile devices, the QWERTY keyboard is not currently threatened by these new layouts as they serve different purposes and as such, people shouldn’t overlook the need for improving their QWERTY typing skills.

Convey Computer?s Implementation of PacBioToCA Algorithm Speeds DNA Sequence Assembly, Delivering Up to Fifteen Times Acceleration

Convey Computer’s Implementation of PacBioToCA Algorithm Speeds DNA Sequence Assembly, Delivering Up to Fifteen Times Acceleration

The Convey hybrid-core system allows customers worldwide to enjoy increased application performance with lower ownership costs.

Richardson, TX (PRWEB) December 11, 2013

Convey Computer™ Corporation announced today the newest addition to Convey’s expanding bioinformatics suite, PacBioToCA, an application that facilitates the assembly of genomes sequenced with Pacific Biosciences® long-read technology. Optimized to take advantage of the highly parallel processing architecture of the Convey hybrid-core (HC) server, PacBioToCA delivers six to fifteen times acceleration.

Researchers running PacBioToCA on Convey HC systems for sequencing and assembly are seeing exceptional results. “The speed up is significant; but even more importantly, researchers are now able to test more parameters,” commented Dr. George Vacek, Director of Convey Computer’s Life Sciences business unit. “Achieving results in a matter of days instead of weeks allows them to refine their approach and get better answers.”

The PacBio® RS II DNA Sequencing System, from Pacific Biosciences (NASDAQ: PACB), helps scientists solve genetically complex problems. Their single-molecule sequencing instruments can generate industry-leading sequence read lengths that dramatically improve genome and transcriptome assembly.

Researchers are attracted to the exceptionally long PacBio reads because they can deliver higher quality assemblies. Prior to the development of algorithms optimized for PacBio read data (such as PacBioToCA), single-pass error rates had been perceived to limit their utility in de novo assembly.

Last year, Dr. Sergey Koren, Bioinformatics Scientist at the National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center, and his colleagues developed an assembly strategy that uses short sequences (either from PacBio circular consensus sequencing or short read technologies) typical of high-throughput sequencers to correct the errors in PacBio reads. This strategy was subsequently extended to use shorter single-molecule reads to correct the longest ones. These techniques deliver high-accuracy long reads, resulting in gold standard genome assemblies.

For larger genomes, the PacBioToCA algorithm can be time-consuming; therefore, Koren collaborated with Convey to optimize the PacBioToCA algorithm for Convey’s highly parallel HC systems. The optimized version of PacBioToCA runs much faster on the Convey HC servers because the alignment algorithm it uses is significantly faster on a Convey HC-2ex server than the best implementation on a standard server.

“It has been shown that long PacBio reads processed with PacBioToCA lead to such high-quality assemblies, researchers are saved the significant subsequent cost of manual finishing,” explained Kevin Corcoran, Senior Vice President of Market Development at Pacific Biosciences. “The combination of the PacBioToCA algorithm and a Convey HC system allows our customers to dramatically speed up research for projects in areas such as functional genomics, comparative genomics, and beyond.”

Convey’s groundbreaking hybrid-core computing architecture tightly integrates advanced computer architecture and compiler technology with commercial, off-the-shelf hardware—namely Intel® Xeon® processors and Xilinx® Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). Particular algorithms are optimized and translated into code that’s loaded onto the FPGAs at runtime to accelerate applications that use these algorithms. The systems help customers dramatically increase performance over industry standard servers while reducing energy costs associated with high-performance computing.

“Adding PacBioToCA to the Convey Bioinformatics Suite reflects our ongoing commitment to the bioinformatics and life sciences community,” concluded Vacek. “We enjoy working with innovators to bring solutions to the industry that will help solve the challenges of the rapidly changing area of sequencing. We look forward to continuing to collaborate with Pacific Biosciences and others on optimization of bioinformatics workflows.”

Convey’s expanding bioinformatics suite is made up of a number of personalities including the Convey GraphConstructor™ for de novo short read assembly, Smith-Waterman for local sequence alignment, and Burrows-Wheeler Aligner for fast reference mapping.

About Convey Computer Corporation

Based in Richardson, Texas, Convey Computer breaks power, performance and programmability barriers with the world’s first hybrid-core computer—a system that marries the low cost and simple programming model of a commodity system with the performance of a customized hardware architecture. Using the Convey hybrid-core systems, customers worldwide in industries such as life sciences, research, big data, and the government/military enjoy order of magnitude performance increases while reducing acquisition and operating costs.

A New Imaging System Improves Accuracy for Dental Implants in Wilmington, NC at Cook Periodontics and Dental Implants

A New Imaging System Improves Accuracy for Dental Implants in Wilmington, NC at Cook Periodontics and Dental Implants

Dr. Phyllis and Deana Cook brings a new imaging system for improved dental implant placement in Wilmington, NC.

Wilmington, NC (PRWEB) December 13, 2013

Dr. Phyllis Cook and Dr. Deana Cook now offer the use of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging system for improved placement of d ental implants in Wilmington, NC.

This system is widely considered to be more revealing than traditional dental x-rays. With CBCT imaging, they can more accurately understand the anatomy of a patient’s dentition, including the soft tissue and nerves present in the face and jaw. This allows them to better plan for the size and exact placement of dental implants to replace missing teeth, while avoiding nerve systems and other potentially complicating structures.

CBCT imaging uses a digital machine that rotates around the patient’s head to capture hundreds of images very quickly. iCat CBCT uses a cone-shaped beam of radiation which is projected at the patient. Data is collected by scanning software that can be used to construct a 3-dimensional image of the patient’s head, jaw and neck. Cone-beam imaging is widely considered to be very useful in the field of implant dentistry. The iCat allows dental professionals to fully visualize the necessary angle, placement site and size of dental implants before surgery. By utilizing the iCat, dental professionals are able to use their preferred software system for treatment planning from start to finish.

Dr. Phyllis Cook and Dr. Deana Cook prefer to use iCat CBCT over traditional dental x-rays for a number of reasons. Traditional x-rays only take one image at a time. They expose the patient to more radiation than iCat CBCT, and are potentially harmful to the environment because of the chemicals used to produce the image. They also fail to show soft tissue and nerve structures as clearly as CBCT imaging.

The responsible use of cone-beam imaging has been sanctioned by the American Dental Association Council on Scientific Affairs in cases where the dental clinician believes that use of CBCT will aid better clinical results in a patient. Dr. Phyllis Cook and Dr. Deana Cook use CBCT both to diagnose and treat periodontal disease and also for more accurate placement of dental implants. Patients with missing teeth who may be interested in implant dentistry can learn more at
