Laguna Tools has recently announced the introduction of the NEW SmartShop 3 CNC Machining Center, developed to introduce an advanced technological platform for the next generation of Laguna CNC Machinery.
The machine features a new computer-designed frame that includes an all-welded structural steel base to ensure the accuracies and cut qualities that have remained key characteristics of the SmartShop CNC product line. Additionally, the new SmartShop’s structural steel gantry is internally reinforced, permitting the use of a variety of machining package options. Finally, a gantry-mounted carousel tool changer was added to reduce tool change times; an especially relevant feature on large table format machines.
The fluid movement of the Laguna SmartShop 3 CNC can be contributed to the precise machining of frame components, precision-ground contour guide rails in all axes, and top-notch “closed-loop” servos and drives by the innovative OSAI Open machine controller.
Movements on both X and Y axes are achieved with world-class helical rack-and-pinions driven by precision planetary drive systems. Z-axis motion is controlled by a precision-ground ball screw and the precision planetary drive system. Another benefit of using a planetary drive system is that it permits Laguna Engineering to mount the guide rails lower on the side of the base frames. This results in the tables easier for the machine operator to load and unload.
Included as a standard feature on the new SmartShop 3 models is a Laguna Tools designed “pod-ready” vacuum table, which combines with six vacuum zones, providing unbeatable fixturing possibilities. Part locator pins and extra -large vacuum ports have been included specifically for panel processing needs.
Another new innovation for the Laguna SmartShop 3 is the inclusion of the new OSAI Open machine control system. It includes a touch screen PC to provide a user-friendly GUI (Graphic User Interface). This also allows the machine to be connected to the local area network (LAN), making file transfers a breeze, while maintaining the reliability of a leading industrial CNC machine controller.
“I gave Laguna Engineering a challenge to develop the next generation SmartShop CNC,” said Torben Helshoj, President of Laguna Tools. “The design requirements were quite simple. It had to build on the tremendous success the SmartShop CNCs have enjoyed. University of Alabama Huntsville (UAH) Vice President for Research Dr. Ray Vaughn, also a distinguished professor of computer science, will be the keynote speaker for the first day of this summer’s Rocket City TakeDownCon. Vaughn will address the topic of critical infrastructure security with his presentation, “Industrial Control Systems Insecurity,” at the premiere [cybersecurity event scheduled for Aug. 18-19 at the Dynetics Solutions Complex, 1004 Explorer Blvd. in Huntsville’s Cummings Research Park. The conference will be preceded by four days of training opportunities.
Vaughn joined UAH, a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education, in May 2013 after serving as associate vice president for research and the department head for Computer Science and Engineering at Mississippi State University. He was also named an eminent scholar and most outstanding faculty member in 2008. Prior to entering academia, he completed a career in the U.S. Army, where he retired as a colonel followed by three years as vice president of DISA Integrated Services at EDS Government Systems.
Vaughn’s research interests are cybersecurity and software engineering with a special focus on industrial control systems security. His past experience includes an assignment at the National Computer Security Center (NSA), where he conducted classified research and participated in the development of national computer security guidance. He has more than 100 publications to his credit and has obtained more than $ 40 million in funded research projects. He received his doctorate in computer science from Kansas State University.
Rocket City TakeDownCon will feature two dynamic tracks during two days, with Monday focused on the “Attack,” teaching participants how even the most protected systems can be breached. The theme for Tuesday will be “Defense,” featuring topics that will challenge attendees to determine if their defense mechanisms are prepared to thwart nefarious and persistent attacks.
Eric Lopez, EC-Council’s director of conferences and events, said, “Dr. Vaughn is an example of the diversity of speakers we have lined up for this year’s event. We are excited to bring a wide range of topics by speakers with various backgrounds and experience to Rocket City TakeDownCon.”

As carmakers edge closer to the era of the self-driving car, it’s instructive to look at how we got here.
That’s the premise behind a new exhibit at Silicon Valley’s Computer History Museum (CHM) — one in which pioneering technology from Velodyne occupies a starring role.
Entitled, “Where To? A History of Autonomous Vehicles,” the exhibit chronicles the decades-long challenge of bringing self-driving cars to the general public. According to the museum, self-driving cars have remained perpetually “two decades away” since the 1930s, while autonomous and semi-autonomous vehicles have conquered the air and sea, and roamed the edges of the solar system.
The CHM exhibit coincides with this week’s landmark introduction of Google’s latest iteration of its self-driving car – one that has neither a steering wheel nor a gas pedal. The new car does feature Velodyne’s real-time 3D LiDAR sensor, mounted atop the vehicle, for object detection and collision avoidance.
Displayed prominently at the museum are Velodyne’s flagship LiDAR HDL products — the classic HDL-64E and the lightweight, compact HDL-32E. Visitors to the Museum can witness Velodyne LiDAR in action in three installations:
Mounted atop a stationary Google self-driving vehicle is the HDL-64E; thanks to images projected on the big screen, visitors can see what the Google car sees through its Velodyne “eyes”
On select dates, visitors can take a test ride in a Google self-driving vehicle and get up close and personal with the HDL-64E
Mounted on a column within the exhibit, the HDL-32E operates in continuous mode, measuring the entire exhibit in real-time – visitors moving through the exhibit halls are captured and their movements are displayed on a big screen TV
At the opening VIP event, David Hall, founder and CEO of Velodyne, reminisced with other leaders in the industry, including fellow DARPA Grand Challenge competitor Chris Urmson, who now heads the self-driving car project at Google.
“It’s tremendously exciting to see that this technology has developed from a specialized, highly futuristic event like the 2004-05 DARPA Grand Challenge in the desert to now taking center stage at a mainstream museum,” Hall said. “Now, members of the general public are able to receive rides and see how object detection and collision avoidance using Veloyne’s spinning LiDAR sensor really works.”
“The Museum is very excited about bringing this fascinating topic to the public,” said Kirsten Tashev, Museum Vice President of Collections and Exhibitions. “If you live in the Bay Area, Google self-driving cars are a common sight, but until now, the public hasn’t gotten a chance to see these cars up close. Even more exciting is the opportunity this exhibit presents for the Museum’s large international audience, who will be particularly excited to learn about the Google self-driving cars as well as other cool Silicon Valley companies, like… Velodyne, the company that developed the LiDAR, which is a key technology used on most self-driving cars.”
The exhibit explores the history of autonomous vehicles as portrayed in science fiction and popular culture. “Self-guiding vehicles go way back, from auto tillers on sailboats to the modern torpedo in the 1860s, and autopilots for planes before World War I,” said Marc Weber, Founder and Curator of the Museum’s Internet History Program. “Your breakfast cereal was likely harvested by a driverless combine. Robotic carts are cruising around Mars right now. Yet one deceptively modest goal has stayed in the driveway since our grandparent’s youth and that’s the self-driving family car. In this exhibit we’re exploring the history of autonomous vehicles in general, and the elusive dream of a car that drives itself.”
